Hi, Duaa! What language do you teach?
I'm teaching Arabic language.
Why did you choose a career in teaching?
As a teacher, I can have a positive impact on students' lives, inspiring and motivating them to reach their full potential. By pursuing a career in education and helping other people reach their goals, you contribute to society as a whole.
That’s very true. Tell us about your teaching qualifications and history.
In 2017 I started teaching Arabic lessons at Al-Sadeq Arabic Association Ethnic School in Sydney, NSW. Then, in 2018, I moved to Adelaide and started teaching Arabic at Al Salam Arabic Ethnic School. In 2020 I graduated as a teacher from The Ethnic Schools Association of South Australia, Adelaide. Since then, I have worked with Adelaide. Currently, I am working at Playford College as an Arabic teacher, and I also develop Arabic curricula for other teachers. And then, of course, I also work for Language Trainers.

You sound like a great teacher. Can you describe your most memorable teaching experience with Language Trainers?
I once had an amazing student who wanted to learn the Arabic alphabet. I taught him an Arabic song to help him remember the letters, but I never imagined he would learn it so quickly. However, in the next lesson, he came and sang the whole song with excellent pronunciation. I was really impressed.

Tell us a fun fact about the language you teach or a favourite expression you ask your students to learn.
Arabic has sounds that don't exist in other languages. There are many differences between Arabic and English, the most obvious being that it is written from right to left. There are also a few sounds that don’t exist in other languages, such as ‘ح', which is like an ‘h’ sound, but stronger, as in ‘hubb’ (love). English also has many words of Arabic origin, either directly from Arabic or indirectly through Romance languages. Examples include racquet, alchemy, alcohol, algebra, algorithm, alkaline (the article ‘al’ in Arabic denotes ‘the’), amber, arsenal, candy, coffee, cotton, ghoul, hazard, lemon, loofah, magazine, sherbet, sofa, tariff – and many more!
