Sydney is becoming the new home for Brazilian and Portuguese people alike. According to Business Insiders, the number of Portuguese-speakers travelling to Australia and applying for residency is booming. If you would like to connect with this community on another level, apply for a job that values Portuguese skills, or get to know more about their fascinating culture, send us an enquiry and start learning Portuguese with Language Trainers!
Learn Portuguese for Work: Learning Portuguese in Sydney offers a lot of opportunities in the world of business. There are many companies always looking for bilingual speakers, such as Marriot International, Nando’s or VMware. You can also visit the Council of Portuguese Communities in Australia, an institution established in 2003 that tries to preserve business relations between Australia and Portugal. If you want to network with Brazilian companies instead, you can contact the Australia Brazil Chamber of Commerce, an organisation that since 1978 has been featuring exciting business opportunities in trading and investment. The Brazil Film Festival on Noller Parade is another great event to take advantage of. They screen the best financial movies of Brazilian origin directed by award winning professionals. Every year, these movies revolve around a certain topic. For example, in 2019 these films were about the importance of commercial loans and how they can help companies skyrocket their business. They are screened in Portuguese, so watching these movies is great to develop your listening skills!
Learn Portuguese for Culture: In addition to networking with Brazilian and Portuguese companies, you can also delve into their fascinating culture in Sydney. For example, you can visit Petersham suburb, which is lined up with Portuguese restaurants and cafés, and where the annual Portuguese Petersham Fair takes place. This event gathers a crowd of 16,000 people, who celebrate the Portuguese culture with music, dance and traditional food for all the family. Another event in which you can get to know more about the Brazilian culture is International Samba Day, a cultural project that aims at promoting knowledge of Samba around the world. This is a competition organised by the Escola de Samba Internacional on Sydenham Road that gathers dancers from all around the world. Most teams come from Brazil so after watching them dance, you can try and talk to the artists in Portuguese to put into use what you learn in your course with Language Trainers!
Learn Portuguese for Social and Food: Learning Portuguese will also give you the chance of meeting new friends in Sydney. The Sydney Brazilian Portuguese MeetUp Group, for example, always welcomes new members who want to practise their Portuguese. It has more than 500 members who meet at a location that is only disclosed to those who join the group. If you are more interested in attending events to meet people with similar interests, you can go to the annual festival on June 10 which celebrates the Day of Portugal and of the Portuguese speaking Communities. If you are looking for restaurants to try the best Portuguese dishes, visit Canterbury Road, the street with more Portuguese food per square metre in the city. You can try piri-piri chicken, Oporto hamburgers, pastel de nata and more than 50 varieties of wine. Why not try and order using your newly-acquired Portuguese pronunciation?
