Just take a stroll around the city and you will hear more than 250 languages spoken on the streets: matching the aforementioned statistic regarding national diversity in the city, Statistics Australia reported in 2015 that nearly 40% of Sydneysiders speak a language other than English at home. And while Arabic is the most common non-English language in the western suburbs, Asian languages, such as Mandarin and Cantonese, are the predominant tongues spoken by native speakers in the northern parts of the city.
