Auckland is a multicultural city where many communities co-exist, each with their own culture and language. One of the most prominent ones in the city is the Japanese community. New Zealand and Japan have enjoyed significant trade and cultural ties ever since the 1950s, when Japanese immigration to New Zealand started after the Second World War devastated the country and the Japanese people fled to start a new life abroad. Today, more than 7,000 residents are of Japanese descent, according to the 2010 census. Study Japanese in Auckland and you will acquire an in-depth understanding of Japanese culture and develop the skills and knowledge you need to bridge the cultural gaps with this community. Understanding Japanese will also enable you to work in social and business environments where the language is used prominently. Contact us and we will design a tailor-made Japanese language course that meets to your learning goals and preferences.

Why Study Japanese in Auckland

For Work: Learning Japanese in Auckland will look great on your CV and definitely improve your chances of getting hired by a business where knowing the language is beneficial. As organisations look beyond local communities to expand their market share, many companies are looking to overseas markets. Japan is one such market and New Zealand’s exports to the Land of the Rising Sun were valued at NZ$3.3 billion in 2017; the top exports being aluminium, dairy and fruit. Some companies that hire fluent Japanese candidates are JTB New Zealand Limited, Jigsaw Jobs Ltd, Movio and Online Republic Ltd. And those who want to start a business in Japan or connect with other entrepreneurs can get in touch with the Japan New Zealand Business Council. Since 1974, this institution has aimed to promote business opportunities and strengthen trade and economic ties between New Zealand and Japan for the benefit of the business community. They always organise networking events and conferences attended by Japanese native speakers, so don’t miss the chance to impress them with your language skills!

For Culture: If would like to experience the ancient Japanese culture without straying far from home, why not attend the events hosted by the New Zealand-Japan Society of Auckland on Mount Eden Road? Founded in 1960, this institution acts as a bridge between these two countries. It aims to promote cultural exchanges with Japanese individuals and institutions. For this to happen, they organise monthly Tsudoi Conversation Evenings, a relaxing and casual Japanese language exchange, accompanied by a light supper and drinks. You can also participate in Aoteakai Tea Ceremony and Taiko drumming classes, so no matter your interests, you can find something that will suit your preferences around Auckland.

For Social: Meet new friends with a similar interest in the Japanese language and culture by joining the Auckland Japanese/English Exchange ENKAI(縁会). If you are looking for opportunities to practice your Japanese and have fun meeting new people, this is the place for you! Learn Japanese, make friends and discover interesting traditions. All proficiency levels are welcome, so don’t hesitate to join in to put your Japanese into practice, even if you are just starting your language course with us! These meetings are held at various Korean and Japanese restaurants around Auckland, such as the Kushi Japanese Restaurant on Durham Street or Tanuki Japanese Restaurant on Queen Street. Order delicious sashimi, sushi, kare raisu or shabu shabu and delight your senses! Their menus are written entirely in Japanese, with an English translation that we are sure you won’t need after taking a course with Language Trainers.
