Melbourne
Arabic

Spoken in over 25 countries around the globe, it’s no surprise that Arabic is gaining traction as one of the world’s most popular languages. Not only can Arabic serve as a direct bridge to picking up multiple other tongues, but can offer a wider world view in the process. With around 300 million native speakers, Arabic is slotted as the fourth most spoken language in the world and has risen in importance as a language of business, education, and travel.

Melbourne is a beautiful city, known for its culturally diverse population: the ethnic groups living in Melbourne come from over 180 different countries and speak 230+ languages, according to a 2014 study by Fairfax Media. About 200,000 Melburnians speaking a language other than English, according to Babbel, and the most popular of these include Greek, Italian, Mandarin and Cantonese. The city is such a diverse melting pot of languages and cultures due to Melbourne having always been a proponent of immigration. From the early 1950s until the 1980s,  most immigrants to arrive to the city came from European nations (because of the economic crises that took place after the Second World War), and Melbourne continues to open its arms to people from all over the world, growing as a new home and a popular tourist destination to many.

And each new culture to arrive has left its mark on the city. Stroll around the city streets, you can find Koreatown, Chinatown, Little Italy and many other immigrant neighbourhoods, where you can enjoy frequent festivals and street parties. Arguably, Victoria's Multicultural Festival is the highlight of these, held at the end of March each year. Melbourne also attracts a lot of international sporting events and you can find various international restaurants, cafes and street food stalls everywhere around the city. This includes Queen Victoria Market, the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere, which is home to thousands of products from all over the world. So, by enrolling in foreign language lessons in Melbourne, you can take advantage of the many professional, educational and cultural opportunities available to bilingual speakers in the city.
